Big Boy is a classic American restaurant serving up typical diner fare for breakfast (all day), lunch, and dinner. I've been to Big Boy locations many times when I was a kid including several (now closed) locations along major toll roads in NY and DE (called Bob's Big Boy). There used to be many Abdow's Big Boy locations throughout New England where I live before it became Bickford's. I used to crave the Big Boy signature Classic Hot Fudge Ice Cream Cake, which is still on the menu today. I still eat breakfast at Bob's Big Boy whenever I'm in SoCal, the Diamond Bar location specifically. This location offers a Breakfast Buffet on the weekends. The other Big Boy location a few miles away in Clio offers the Breakfast Buffet daily. There's also a Soup, Salad & Fruit Buffet offered during lunch and dinner. After visiting Frankenmuth and heading towards Detroit, I stopped at Big Boy in Birch Run for lunch. Before entering the restaurant, I had to take a "selfie" with the Big Boy statue in front of the building. Upon entering, I was promptly greeted and seated in a booth near the salad bar. The Soup, Salad & Fruit Buffet ($7.99) had around 30 or so items including greens, garnishes, dressings, cold salads, fruits, dry seeds & croutons, and 4 kinds of soups. I decided on the Spaghetti & Meatballs ($9.99) served with garlic bread and choice of one side (I chose a side salad). The side salad served on a glass plate had a mix of iceberg & leaf lettuce, red cabbage, tomatoes, cucumbers, shredded cheese, croutons, dressing on the side. The spaghetti & meatballs entree was quite good, which had 3 homemade grilled meatballs (moist texture inside), thick meat sauce and soft spaghetti. The grilled garlic bread was buttery. After lunch, I was tempted to go with the Classic Hot Fudge Ice Cream Cake ($3.99) for dessert, which I enjoyed as a kid. Since I ate plenty of food for lunch, I decided on the Mini Ultimate Brownie ($1.99) topped with a scoop of hard ice cream (I chose chocolate) and thick hot fudge. This dessert was alright. The brownie was stale and tough and dry along the edges. Overall, the lunch I had was good and reasonably priced. The service was very friendly and I paid the check at the front register. Before I left the place, I decided last second to purchase a souvenir Big Boy coin bank ($6.99) to put on my desk at work (I accumulate lots of loose change for the vending machines).

3 stars for nostalgia! Love that BB's all have the statue outside! Takes me back to when I was little. The food... Well that's another story. Don't go here expecting anything special or you will be really sad. In a positive note they have hashbrowns! Although they weren't that great, boo!

It seems every time we are in Birch Run and we go to Big Boy it's awful ! The waitresses are slow, the food is cold and tastes awful! This time I had the new cookies and cream pancakes. There was barely any cream, and it was loaded with chocolate syrup (the pic had it drizzled on) when I took a few bites I realized why....it was burnt! The hashbrowns tasted like leather smells, and the scrambled eggs were rubbery. Most people in my party (myhusband, my kiddo, my parents and my 2 nieces) got fries and they were awful! The time before that when we went, we asked if they were short handed because the food was awful and service was super slow but we were told no they werent. When I was asked by the manager how things were, I told him and he said, "Oh." No apologies were made, nothing, just "Oh."

If I could give less than one star I would. Burnt Mac and cheese as a side with our daughter's burger. How do you mess up jello? The salad bar was underwhelming. At 5 pm most mixed salads were empty. There were chips and what looked like nacho cheese but what turned out to be melted American cheese. Won't be back.

My boyfriend and I stopped here coming from Tawas to Utica. First when we came in around 6:00 on a Friday it was pretty busy. We waited about 5 minutes to get seated, the waitress took our drinks before we even sat down. I just thought the place was way under staffed. I didn't get a refill the entire time, we had mozzarella sticks as an appetizer and it took 40 minutes for them to come out. However the waitress did hook us up with an extra 3 sticks because apparently they gave our order to the wrong table. Then an extra ten minutes out entres came out and they were pretty good, the fried were soggy however. We then got dessert, and I ordered a slice of strawberry pie. There was hardly any crust, it was soggy, and OVERLOADED with strawberrys. Then the bill was close to fourty dollars. Overall, this place was not good tonight.
